“Quantum Mechanics, Potentiality and the Philosophy of Gilbert Simondon”
Abstract
Since its origin quantum mechanics has been directly related and interpreted in terms of the notions of possible and potential. However, the meaning of such notions remains still today completely obscure with respect to the formalism of the theory. The difficulties to account for an ontological realm of potentiality might be related to the development of modern science which, after Newton, seemed to follow the path laid down by the substantialist tradition. In this presentation we will argue that the reconsideration of the hylemorphic tradition, as analyzed and discussed by Simondon, can lead us to a possible development and a new understanding of the problems to which quantum mechanics confronts us.
